Stone restoration services San Jose is one of the many services Integrity Stone and Tile Cleaning performs.
Stone restoration will be needed on almost every marble floor during the life of the marble, travertine
or limestone tile floor.
When a marble floor is first installed, the tile installer does his best to lay the marble or travertine tile
as flat as possible.
Every tile contractor I've spoken too, tells me he, or his workers lay tile completely flat, with no noticeable
lippage (the lip that's left because of uneven tiles adjacent to each other).
That's funny, every marble or travertine tile floor I see, has some degree of lippage to it and needs to grinded
flat to remove the unwanted lips.
Not to say every tile installer lays uneven tiles, to their credit, a lot of the time it's due to settling of
the foundation or other movement behond their control. There are also standards they follow and if it's within the
industry's standards, it's considered flat.
Leveling a marble or travertine floor is a quite in depth process, which requires grinding the floor flat with very course
grained metal diamond pads. This process, as you can imagine is very time consuming, which equals very costly.
If a marble floor has dulled or has been scratched over time, and is in need of some stone restoration, we can
hone and polish the floor without flattening the floor.
Also, any acidic liquid that touches a calcium based tile like marble, travertine or limestone, will etch the
stone by reacting with the calium. This etch can only be removed by honing and polishing.
Honing and polishing a marble, travertine or limestone floor can restore the polished finish, but it will not remove the
lips or eneven tiles.
Yes, this is the more affordable way to go, but one thing to keep in mind is where ever there is
an eneven tile, there is risk of picture framing being present.
Picture framing is where the low spot of the tile is visible when looking at the tile at just the right angle. If there
are scratches on this area, the diamond polishing pads are not able to reach this part of the tile.
We try to blend this area
when going through the polishing step, but sometimes these picture frames will be visible.
Honing and Polishing Marble Floors
Honing is the process of removing light scratches from the natural stone floor with the use of diamond abrasives.
The difference between grinding and honing is the diamonds used in honing are encrusted in resins
rather than metals used in grinding.
The honing process will continue, progressively using finer diamond honing pads until the desired finish is attained (sometimes
up to 5 or 6 diamond grits depending on a flat or honed finish or a high polished finish).
For lower maintenance a honed finish is recommended, where the marble, travertine or limestone tile has no refletive properties.
If a polished finish is desired, the honing process continues with the use of fine grit diamond pads and is
finished with polishing powders to really pop the shine of the marble tile.
The reflective properties or depth of clarity are what we look for in a polished finish.
Stone restoration services don't just apply to restoring the polished finish to marble or travertine floors,
but to marble vanity tops as well.
If you have marble vanities in your bathrooms or marble countertops in your kitchen, I bet they are in need of marble restoration. There are
so many acidic chemicals that we use for cleaning, that those marks that look like water marks, are most likely etch marks that were made from
the cleaning chemicals.
Honing and polishing is most likely needed to remove and restore the polished finish.
When it comes to stone restoration services San Jose or just maintaining natural stone and tile and grout, we strive to help educate our
customers on the best protection they can have, helping them save time and money in costly restoration costs down the road.
