Non Darkening Slate Sealer

I am using gray slate (cut from 1" pool table slate) as fireplace trim surround and the finished hearth in front of the fire glass doors.
Is there any sealer that leaves the slate the same color without darkening it fmom the light to medium gray color.????
And, is it necessary to seal the slate in this application?????
Thanks.......Al
Hi Al,
Very good questions! You don't have to use a sealer that darkens the stone if you don't want that type of look.
You can use any penetrating sealer for natural stone. Penetrating sealer should not leave any finish.
The only reason to use a penetrating sealer is to protect from staining.
If the area you're tiling won't get much traffic, then you don't have to seal the area.
If you think there will be a lot of traffic and the slate might become stained, then I would seal it.
I hope this helps you make a decision on whether on not to seal you slate tile.
