how much is generally charged?

by rebecca

I have a mosaic travertine on my floor. There was obviously a thickness issue because some of the pieces stick up more than others.

How much is usually charged to sand the whole floor down to smooth and also how much to polish the travertine to be shiny?

I'm just curious what kind of cost I'm looking at.

Hi Rebecca,

You have a situation that can be very expensive. It's hard for me to estimate what the charge could be to grind your floor flat, because I need so much more information.

First let me comment on what information you've given me.

You said you think there is thickness problem. I don't think you have a thickness problem. The problem was your tile installer.

He should have installed the travertine tiles flat in the first place. I'm not going to go into how this is done, but if he is licensed professional, he most likely would have installed it flat.

Secondly, if you wanted a polished travertine, you should have bought the travertine polished in the first place.

The process to grind your floor flat is quite tedious and because you have travertine, the process will open up holes.

The holes can be filled, but this will add a whole day more to the process and make it more expensive.

With the limited information you've given me I can't even begin to estimate a cost. Any stone professional would need to inspect the floor thoroughly to provide a cost.

I would give a call to local stone professional to get a feel for what it would cost in you local market.

Expect the cost to be quite high. I think you could have avoided the high restoration cost, if you would have done two things.

First, bought polished tiles and secondly, used a quality installer who would have installed the tile flat in the first place.

These two things may have been more expensive at the beginning, but in the long run no restoration costs and no unneeded grinding of the floor, which may have been cheaper.

Sorry for long winded explanation, but these are some of the things people should consider before installing their tile floor.

Bare Minimum Price
by: Pedro

Again, I'm not sure what you're asking. You want a bare minimum price, for what? To bring the mosaic to a polished finish or to flattten, and then bring to a polished finish.

These are two things will vary greatly on price. To just bring a polished finish I would probably be at least $350.

To flatten and then polish I would probably charge $500-$700.

These are only estimates on what I would charge. You will have to see what a stone restoration professional in your local area would charge.

I would call and talk to someone there in your city to find out the process and how much they would charge.

I hope this helps.

The mosaics were on a sheet all stuck together. They should have been flat from the factory but were not. The installer took out the pieces that stuck up really bad and set those by hand. But there's only so much he could do. And yes the polish was an after thought. But I just wanted a rough price on sanding and polishing. Lets assume it doesn't open up holes. Just to get the bare minimum price. It's a 40sf bathroom.
