Cleaning Terrazzo Floors
When cleaning terrazzo floors one thing you should be aware of is that terrazzo has marble chips in it, which are a calcium based, which makes it
susceptible to etching by any acidic liquid.
Do not clean your terrazzo floor with any acidic chemicals or you may etch the floor or even make it duller.
Types of acidic chemicals are toilet bowl cleaners and some tile cleaning products. Also, vinegar is acidic and should not be used on
your terrazzo floor.
This is especially important if your terrazzo floor has a polished finish, because any etching that could occur, will dull the polished finish, making it looked stained.
Another thing to keep in mind is your terrazzo floor may have had a coating applied to it, such as wax. The wax will begin to deteriorate with time and
sometimes discolors with time.
If your terrazzo flooring has had a wax or some other coating applied to it, it might need a little more than just a cleaning to help it look better.
Check out our terrazzo stripping page for more information on how to strip the old wax or coating off the terrazzo.
In general, mopping terrazzo floors regularly with a
neutral floor cleaner
and a flat mop, will be the best and easiest way to maintain terrazzo flooring.

How to Clean Terrazzo Floors
Cleaning Terrazzo Floors
Cleaning terrazzo floors is the same as cleaning any natural stone and isn't a hard task.
Don't be worried about damaging your terrazzo floors.
We always recommend
neutral cleaners
for all terrazzo, natural stone surfaces.
Neutral cleaners are safe for all terrazzo, natural stone and tile and grout surfaces.
If you have really dirty terrazzo floors, you can use an
alkaline cleaner.
that is safe for terrazzo and all natural stone surfaces.
Once you've diluted your cleaner, what you want to do is:
- Mop the solution on your terrazzo floor and let it dwell 10-20 minutes making sure not to let it dry.
- Scrub the floor with a brush vigorishly.
- Mop up the dirty solution and rinse with warm water a few times.

What ever you clean your terrazzo surface with, always rinse well and dry completely with a cotton or
microfiber cloth.
Drying it completely helps because any wet area left to dry, may have dirt left in
it which doesn't evaporate like the water does.
Now you're ready to seal your terrazzo floor. Check out the
sealer page for a good
penetrating sealer.
