Is high polish travertine easy to scratch?
Travertine and marble tile are made from a calcium base and can be easily scratched.
If you decide to have highly polished travertine or marble, I recommend not to wear shoes in the house.
Not only can it be scratched from normal wear and tear, but if you use acidic chemicals to clean them, they can be etched.
We've cleaned many homes with highly polished marble and travertine that were over 5 years old and they looked perfect.
The home owners took care not to wear shoes regularly in their home and the floor remained scratch free and really not that dirty.
We've also cleaned marble and traverting floors that were only 1 or 2 years old that looked scratched, dirty and etched. Basically we had to do a complete restore to bring back the high polished to the floor.
My recommendations are, if you have a high maintenance family, meaning kids, and a dog, don't put marble or travertine on your floor. Use ceramic tile.
If you are very mindful and don't wear shoes in the house and keep your floor very clean, then marble or travertine can look great for years to come.
I hope this helps.
