How to deepen the color of natural slate tile.
Looking for advice on how to deepen the color of natural slate mosaic tile, which is on both the bathroom and shower floors. We are not wanting a high gloss shiny finish, but would like to enrich the color just a bit. It has been sealed twice with a penetrating sealer, and we are now ready to do the finishing color deepening touches. Many thanks for any help.
What you're looking for is an enhancing sealer. Although you used a penetrating sealer, you may still be able to use a enhancing sealer.
You could have just used an enhancing sealer instead of the penetrating sealer, but it still may be okay.
The enhancing sealer darkens the stone, bringing out the colors and leaving a kind of wet look without the gloss.
We recommend using enhancing sealers on slate tiles, because the natural look of some slates is an almost chalky look. The enhancing sealer darkens the stone and also seals the slate.
You can use a water-based or solvent-based enhancing sealer. In my opinion the solvent-based will last longer.
If you buy the StoneTech (same as Dupont), at Lowes it will be a water-based. You can find the solvent-based at certain tile stores.
It's called Enhancer Pro and is more expensive than the water-based enhancer. Also, in my opinion it's easier to work with.
Read the directions carefully and follow to a T and you should have no problem.
