Cleaning Travertine Tile
When cleaning travertine tile there is one thing you should be aware of, that it is a calcium based stone, which makes it
susceptible to etching by any acidic liquid.
It's important to know what cleaners are being used on your travertine tile
and to avoid any acidic chemicals.
We tend to see this near areas where acidic cleaning chemicals are used, like around the toilet bowl.
This is especially important if your travertine tile has a polished finish, because any etching that could occur,
will dull the polished finish, making it looked stained.
This also happens with a honed finish, but is more easily
seen in a polished finish.
In general, mopping travertine floors regularly with a
neutral floor cleaner
and a flat mop, will be the best and easiest way to maintain your travertine.

How to Clean Travertine
Cleaning travertine is the same as cleaning any natural stone and isn't a hard task.
Don't be worried about damaging your stone.
We always recommend
neutral cleaners
for all natural stone surfaces and that includes travertine.
Neutral cleaners are safe for all natural stone and tile and grout surfaces.
If you have more soiled travertine like in the photo above, you can use an
alkaline cleaner.
that is safe for stone surfaces.
Once you've diluted your cleaner, what you want to do is:
- Mop the solution on your stone and let it dwell 10-20 minutes making sure not to let it dry.
- Scrub the grout lines with a grout brush and the travertine tiles with a deck brush.
- Mop up the dirty solution and rinse with warm water a few times.
What ever you clean your stone surface with, always rinse well and dry completely with a cotton or
microfiber cloth.
Drying it completely helps because any wet area left to dry, may have dirt left in
it which doesn't evaporate like the water does.
Now you're ready to seal your travertine. See our sealing travertine page for how to seal travertine.
When it comes to cleaning travertine or just maintaining natural stone and tile and grout, we strive to help educate our
customers on the best protection they can have, helping them save time and money in costly restoration costs down the road.
