Tile and Grout Cleaning

Cleaning Travertine Tile

Cleaning Travertine When cleaning travertine tile there is one thing you should be aware of, that it is a calcium based stone, which makes it susceptible to etching by any acidic liquid.

It's important to know what cleaners are being used on your travertine tile and to avoid any acidic chemicals.

We tend to see this near areas where acidic cleaning chemicals are used, like around the toilet bowl.

This is especially important if your travertine tile has a polished finish, because any etching that could occur, will dull the polished finish, making it looked stained.

This also happens with a honed finish, but is more easily seen in a polished finish.

How to Clean Travertine

Cleaning Travertine Cleaning travertine is the same as cleaning any natural stone and isn't a hard task.

Don't be worried about damaging your stone.

We always recommend neutral cleaners for all natural stone surfaces and that includes travertine.

Neutral cleaners are safe for all natural stone and tile and grout surfaces.

If you have more soiled travertine like in the photo above, you can use an akaline cleaner that is safe for stone surfaces.

Once you've chosen your cleaner, what you want to do is:
  1. Mop the solution on your stone and let it dwell 10-20 minutes making sure not to let it dry.

  2. Scrub the grout lines with a grout brush and the travertine tiles with a deck brush.

  3. Mop up the dirty solution and rinse with warm water a few times.

Cleaning Travertine What ever you clean your stone surface with, always rinse well and dry completely with a cotton or microfiber cloth.

Drying it completely helps because any wet area left to dry, may have dirt left in it which doesn't evaporate like the water does.

Now you're ready to seal your travertine. See our sealing travertine page for how to seal travertine.
