Cleaning Granite Countertops
Cleaning granite countertops is easy and you shouldn't be afraid of them.
To take
care of granite countertops
properly one thing you need to do is clean up spills in timely manner, which includes cleaning oil and grease.
Daily cleaning can be done with warm water and a little bit of dish soap.
For best results, use a microfiber cloth
to buff dry. The microfiber cloth will remove streaks and keep your granite countertops looking great.
Using cleaning chemicals like windex may actually be slowly damaging your granite and deteriorating the polish of the granite.
Granite countertop care
isn't hard, as long as you know what not to use.
How to Clean Granite Countertops
Cleaning granite countertops can be done daily and there is no need for expensive "granite cleaners".
If you're not sure how to clean your granite countertops, don't worry, clean them as if they were any other countertop, with
warm water and soap.
If you're using a cleaning product and your are not sure if it can damage your granite counter, do a test first.
What you're looking for is if the cleaner dulls or etches the polished finish. Sometimes it can be a gradual effect and
you might not see it right away, which could lead to a bad situation.
In general, most granites are not sesitive to acids, but that there is always the exception to the rule and that's why you
should always perform a test.
We recommend using neutral cleaners for cleaning granite and all natural stone surfaces. Neutral cleaners will not
be harmful to your granite and will not deteriorate any sealer you have on your granite.
Aggressive cleaners not only can damage your granite, but can also deteriorate any sealer that's been applied
to your granite.
Check out our
granite countertop cleaner
page for making your own neutral cleaner.
That's another important point you should be aware of, taking care of granite countertops also requires them to stayed sealed.
Take a look at our
sealing granite countertops
page for more information on sealing granite.
As stated before, after cleaning your granite countertops, dry it with a microfiber cloth to remove any streaks
left by the wet sponge or cloth.
Drying it completely helps because any wet area left to dry, may have dirt left in
it which doesn't evaporate like the water does.
Also, any water on the granite left to evaportate may have calcium in it and thats how hard water
deposits are deposited on the surface.
Really that's all there is to it when it comes to cleaning granite countertops and maintaining your natural
stone investment.
If you do develop stains or have some other issues with your granite countertops, check our our
